Dear companion and children
I am well this morning and hope these lines will find you the same I was verry glad to receive a few lines last eavening from you I was on gard when it came to me and could not read it untill I was off my post I am happy to hear that you got through safe to the old native state well may god bless and protect you and cheer you up in all the dark hours you may have. Children do be kind and affectionat to your dear mother who has taken care of you in your infantcy and if I should not be permitted to return to you do not forget that your farther wile on the tented field or on the march daily prays for your well fare
we do not know how long we will stay here there is 10 of our company sick three has went to there long homes we may stay here this winter to defend this city but if you direct your letters to camp. F.6. reg Iowa vol Lafayett Park camp Jesse St Louis, they will come to me if we should go to texas we will stand the storm it wont be long well ancor by and by give my respects to all friends if any ther be well I am tierd I was on gard all nite and have been doing my washing this morning and it is raining now and i am seting in our tent writeing these lines O if I could talk to you I could tell you more than a bushel write often to a poor soldier far from his home and loved ones John G Scoville
