Dear wife and children i am washing to day some as you see i must carry some watter then write some more now i suppose it must be hard times for you but you have your libberty the children the garden the pleasant scenes of home life that is some comfort to you i cant leave a camp without a pass and for a short time. we have 4 roll calls each day everry man that is not / in ranks is put on gard well that is nothing much i had as soon be on gard as not but i have not been under gard yet nor in the gard house O may i ever live a sober life a life of piety and free from sin sin not not but there is no one perfect no not one now dear children do your duty to Mother O yes be kind i will come home as soon as i can get leave write ofton to a soldier by the name of J G S
