Dear and ever loved companion and children i am well i received a letter from you yesterday i was sorry to hear that you was sick O if i was there to take care of you but i am away down in Tennisee i wrote to you something about furlows well our colonel has not had orders to give furlows yet and i think we will not get any untill after VixBurg is taken, so i will send 24 dollars to you we was paid 26 dollars each a few days since and there is almost 5 months pay due me i am afraid you will nead this money before you get it. it is a good plan to have a house of your own and stop paying rent but i think it is to much of an undertakeing for you to have care and trouble of finishing that house but you must leave some of it for me to do when i come home. we have no prospect of a fite soon we have a great deal of picket garding to do our com goes out on picket every third day 24 hours each time we go out this after noon at 4 oclock and we will have a bad time of it for it is raining but our overcoats and blankets will keep us partly dry day before yesterday about 40 girilles was torn up some of the railroad track burnt 2 cars took 2 or 3 prisioners got 9 hundred dolars from a citizen and skedadled all with in 2 milds of our camp so we will be apt to stay at this post for some time /
I receivd a letter while writeing this from John and Laura i am happy to know that they are well and happy give them my respects
my dear Ruth have pacients and keep your trust in the lord i shuerly will come home as soon as i can if god spairs my unworthy life Ruth pleas pray for my safe return to thee O may i as a yet cheer that lonely heart and return as a blessing to my dear wife and sweet children gd god bless there little hearts how i want to see them. give my respects to farther Chapman Ruth dont be discouraged for i dearly beleive that we will spend happy days together yet and when our troubles are ore in this sinful world i expect to go whare god is and spend live while endless ages roll in that eadon of love whare joy and peace forever reigns O what a happy thought well i must stop writeing and get ready to go out on picket kiss the children for i remain your affectionate companion untill deth
