Dear companion and children it has been some time since i have written to you owing to have been on the march for some time and had no chance for Male I am well at present praying these lines will find you injoying the same blessing I am still cooking for company we have had a hard time of it since we left Syracuse we left syracuse and went to Springfield in the south west part of Mo after price but when we got there he had left the state we went on a force march we got out of provisions except beef without salt for some days. we took posession of a grist mill and ground wheat and made bread of it with out bolting it we have plenty to eat now. we are now on our way back to St Louis we have got to this place whare the cars run to St Louis and are wateing our turn to go on them we have been here two days we do not know whar we will go from St Louis. O Ruth how i wish i was at home with you and them sweet children / i dream of home think of home but alass i am far from you O may god spare my life and the life of my dear family and permit me to return to you and spend the remainder of my life in peace and happyness with a dear and affectionate family O ware it not for the religion of christ that chears me in my dark hours and that will carry the true hearted christian to the better land i would dispare but i look to the lord for every good and perfict gift tel the children that pap will come home be fore long to stay with them the colonel says the pay rolls are being made out now and we will be payed off and discharged as soon as we get to St Louis well i will give you a brief discription of the country that we have past through we crost some beautiful praries then we crost the osage river then the osage Mountains which was covered with rocks srubs and prickly pears then we slowly decended untill we reacht a fertile and productive country for some 40 milds then we came to the foot of the osark Mountains i saw Sam at Springfield. write to me direct to St Louis i sent 10 dollars to you in aletter some time since may god bless you all J G Scoville
