Memphus, tenn
July 22

well i have written one or
letters morning and i will write a little more—I must write to Phi and Lol and Philander and Princis and Silvy and little Ruth and Big Ruth
well i think that i and several thousand soldiers will remain hear for some time we did not have much breakfast but maby we will get some dinner for the teams are gone to haul some from the boat landing some ten or twelve loads will be drove in to camp

let camp reports be spread
let cannons roar
the sons of freedom must be fed
untill peace we restore

then can the brave lads
Of freedoms land
Be unreasonably fed
O no never the brave band

But i must not write
or think to fite
unless the heart be true
then let me think of you

O shaw i cant compose
no nor plant a rose
Nor eaven go to town
Nor get the alone

            Now Ruth if you can send 25 cts worth of stamps / i will be glad to receive them yes i would like to be there this summer but i am not O no far from it but i will be there som time if i live yes thats so

well i am unhappy and some times dispair of earthly blessings but that wont do at all, no, never, never, well i intirely give way to such feelings the god of heaven forbid that we should be kept apart while there is life there is hopes yes hope for the best, and when afliction comes…it is bad enoughf when it comes i know you have a hard lot dearist but meet me in that land of spirits brite there is no sorrow there

it is raining thank god maby the air will be a little cooler you cant hardly imagin how hot the sun shines eaven this far south well our army cant stand up under the heat much forether south we have to ware thick clothes and our cartrages that we carry on the march on drill on gard are heavy well we came 60 milds yesterday in the fore noon and some of our best men was sun struck or over hot so that they panted and died some has recovered the fact is soldiering is hard business the best way you fix it up that so

well Ruth if your potatoes [?] vines do well i will try 2 of the large ones next [faded]
