Dear Ruth and
Children i write a
few lines informing
that i am well
at present we are in camp 7 milds east of Memphus we stopt thear yesterday we will be apt to to Memphus tomorrow and remain there untill we get some men clothes and some money that is due us we may posibly remain there some time but i think we will go from there to some well i have no ideah whare we have no sines of any fite at present it is verry warm / O may those lines reach my dear family in good health i have not rec any letter from home for a long time i was expecting 3 or 4 before this time but things have not come yet. well i have written of tow but maby you do not get all my letters so we must be content on that score. i was on gard last nite at colonel McDowels head quarters there was 4 of us to gard a well so we had an easy nite of it there was a slave woman living in the back yard that had a flock of gease she said if we would gard the gease that she would / us our breakfast and she had warm bread and ham and coffee yes and butter the firs butter that i had tasted for maney a long day so we had a good breakfast once more well we live just midling but we get tiered of the one thing crackers and sow belly and sow belly and crackers. well i must not complain for tis not rite for vols to murmer much for they must see hard times and aut to consider the matter well before inlisting. O for a home scean in reality i dream of home ofton i say home i mean Ruth and children they are those i parted with months ago

good morning Ruth i am well how is your health and how is my dear sweet children this morning well i doo not know whether sick or not i am a long way from love ones at Larue pleas send me some postage stamps for i have to give 5 cts and ofton hard to get O tell me all your troubles and all your prosperity it is 2 oclock and we start at 4 for town well it will be a hard but short march i sweat so John Scoville
