Dear wife and children again i write to you i am well hopeing and praying that these lines may reach you in good health i have not herd from you for some time O how anctious i am to get a letter from you we went out to work on the brest works this morning but it rained so we came back and i can have a chance to write a letter to my dear companion O i wish i was with her we have built log huts and are tolerable comfortable but we dont know how long we will stay to injoy them / there is some talk of us going back to Memphis and then down the river to Vixburg there is no rebbels here for us to fite the coldest weather that we have had this winter the ground did not freze more than three inches deep, spring has commenced hear now the grass is starting up and the frogs are squealing and the larks singing and it seams some like spring in old Montgomery but alass i am away down in Tennisee but i live in hopes of better days to come, yes i think there is hapyness on earth for me yet if not there is in heaven

                        Good morning dear Ruth i am well how are you and the children. i wish i knew that you ware well too well it has cleared off and the sun is shineing so beautiful and brite and the birds are singing among the trees near our camp, but what comfort has the soldier it is drill drill and work on the brestworks and anser to 5 rool calls each day, but that is nothing if it will help to put down the rebellion so that we may all return to our homes to injoy peace and hapyness once more but god doeth all things well it will all work out rite yet now Ruth write all about how you are geting along, keep up good spirits i will send all / my money to you use it for the family o my dear children i want to see you all so bad, you must be kind and good to mother yes and receive her kind instruction i will come home as soon as i posibly can. O may it be the will of god for me to return soon. pleas write ofton write all Lol you and John must write yes write ofton Ruth the next money that i will send after this i will express if i can get it to the any express office. i will send 5 dollars in this letter
