            Dear wife and children and friends of the union likewise to the friends of christanity i received your christmas gift letter night before last I am well except a pain in my side and brest and some headache the cause of the headache is i was on provse gard at town Otaville 7 mild from camp lastnight. you cannot immagin how glad i was to hear from you have not received any letter for three weeks or more except one from Dr SSS a good letter indeed they was except him self he thinks of being in the field in the spring if his health will permit ruth Ruth if i could go to some still place to write this letter i would be willing to give one gold dollar and all most willing to give another to sleep three hours i some place of stillness but i must not murmer or complain Soldier becom usd to nois and confusion. well have been to supper and feel some little better Ruth you sayed Jane Riggle was complaining give her my respects tell her i would lik to see her verry much and also tell her that i will send some money for her or rather Reason B Riggle / i want you all to be kind to Farther C and keep him from work pap i would glad to see you and talk with you but i cannot. well think Ruth you know the team is yours so do with as you see propper i will send you some money to be at your hand to use it as need it i god spares my life i will indeavor with chearffulness to ade you in your hard lot yes you know that i know your hard station in life for long long years

Jan 15..4 oclock morning the tent is still and i can get to write a few lines in quiet mabe except being interrupted by some coming in that is on gard i am in good health decently clothed well fed tolerable well poorly lodged, owing to haveing my place next the door which is a thin blanket our quarters is a perfect mud hole owing to snow and warm wether which directtion from Days do you live, then i will know whare it is O my dear and affectionate Ruth i am unhappy could i but lay my head on your dear breast once more what i would give  but meet me in heaven if not on earth pray much for me and the children and self
