Dear Ruth and children
I write a few lines informing you that i am well hopeing these lines will reach you in good health i am nursing hear now i have a great many steps to take some times 3 or 4 wanting some thing all at once i am up nights waiteing on the poor sick and wounded soldiers but it is easer than marching and fighting down in front my reg has had another hard fight since i left it i come here with the irriciplis on my face but soon got well and went to nursing i expect to stay / hear some time i want to hear from you bad i have written 2 letters before this and have not herd a word from you since i left you in tears at home O sad lonesom hours but my trust is in the lord who has protected me through so many toils and dangers i was in the battle at Reacaca four days in succesion and come out un hurt. i would write oftener but my knapsack is at Chatnooga and all my things in it and i am out of money to get paper or tobaco or any thing elce i ought to go to the reg so i would get paid for i expect you nead money may the lord preserve us
O i wish this cruel war was past and i at home at last o i think i would be so happy with dear family pleas write soon your affectionate husband John G Scoville
