Dear Ruth and Children
I write a few lines to let you know that I am well at present I was verry sick last weak but it was the will of gods will that I was to get well O I wanto har from you and my dear children so bad it fills my heart with grief to think of gone by days of happyness brite hours we once injoyed how sweet there memry still but they have left an acheing void this world can never fille /

do pleas write to a lone forsaken one that is in the camp of this large bodey of brother solgers little sibby was sick when I parted with my all on earth I would be so glad to hear from you all O may it be the will of god to spare our lives that we ma meet once more on earth but if not I expect to meet you in heaven we cook for ourselves now in messs of eight Mr James Michel H H Adams Early Mr Stinert Mr Gutches R Buel Mcaully J Mortes is one mess / I am the foreman of our mess we do not know how long we will stay here we drill everny day I must close my letter and get supper for it my day to cook some from Washington and Brighton Oskaloosa are here O Ruth write to me often Laura and Phi pleas write to your unhappy farther

July 26 the sun is just riseing it is a beautiful morning the revelee is beating and i must soon be in ranks for roll call our breakfast is about readedy
Ruth kiss my sweet children for me may heaven bless them / keep in good heart there is a place whare trouble never comes and the weary are at rest there we can meet our friends to greet and never part again we have preaching Sunday and eavenings in our camp the post office is for the camp is kept by Mr Lieut Grimes at our tent our boys are all well 20 sick out of three thousand tis for our union we go forward to fite for liberty that our children and grand children may injoy it your my little testament is good company for me it sites me from earth to heaven where the parting tear is wiped a way and the homeless find a friend John G Scoville
