at a rail road bridge
the bridge has been
burned and rebuilt
by our men it is Sunday
and a beautiful morning
Dear companion and dear sweet children
i am well at present O may it pleas god that these lines may reach you in as good health as i am in. well i do hardly know what to write, we had a hard march day before yesterday coming back to this place we past through it last week it is a nice little town, this Moscow and Lafayett 10 milds from hear is as large as Larue, and Lagrange is larger than Marion the inhabitance are principly Secesh and slaves / O the curses of slavery would to god it was wiped from our land yes extinkt from American soil just to see them on the plantations as we pass 20 or 30 heare and 8 or 10 there toiling away in the broiling sun some men some women and the overseeer with his [?]bully and whip. Some times a shed in the middle of the field to set in but the poor slaves must work rain or shine. thank god we have helpt a good many to there freedom and i hope to live to free more of them i have seen enoughf of slavery to make my heart bleed for them yes my verry sole feels for them it looks hard to see young colerd women folowing a mule all day in the corn or cotton field plowing away, but i must write some on some other subject when we go on piqqet or grand gard we go a company at a time. it comes our turn once in 10 days as there is 10 companys in a reg our camp is increasing the wounded are geting well and returning. well the boys are in the river swiming it is woolf river i am seting under the shade of a large hickry tree a bout 2 rods from the stream and 5 rods from the bridge. 5 of our comp are on post at another bridge ½ mild up the railroad and 4 on post at this bridge the remainder of the camp are hear as a reserve. we will have to post some more gards tonight i will be on duty at this post well we have just taken 2 prisioners / this bridge is 5 hundred ft long and was rebuilt by our soldiers in 5 hours so you may know the yankeys as the rebbels calls us can work as well as fite yes the bridge in Mo crost Lamien that old Jackson burned was rebuilt by Bixely ingnear reg in 24 hours and it is a coverd bridge 250 ft long. now Ruth we will draw money again before long and i will send it to you as soon as i get it as tomorrow is your birth day i will not finish this letter and write some more maby some thing may ocur worthy of note
