Dear companion i am well and hope these lines will reach you in good health i said i was well, maby i am O how long dear savior will those days of sadness continue what is there hear away down in Alabama to make me happy nothing but soldiers negroes and ignorant citizens and rocks and mountains (i stopt writeing to draw rations)
Feb 21st
Dear family i will finish this letter after this long delay / it is Sunday we have just 10 oclock inspection the weather is warm and beautiful birds a singing bugles ringing and drums a beating [section of text faded] well i think i can undergo as much as 2 thirds of the young men i am ancious to hear from Silva and all the rest yes i am uneasy and troubled and will be untill i get home O may it be the will of god to spair all our precious lives untill we meet again i think that it will be [faded] / [faded] of me for not coming to see you and for writeing that i thought i would be at home at such and such a time but if you knew how ancious i have been to see you and knew how difficult it has been [faded] that happy place called home sweet home O i longe to be there and its troubles or pleasures to share. now dear Ruth please forgive O forgive poor J. G. Scoville for past rongs and maby i may yet see / [faded] i live to comfort and protect those dear children whose sufferings have been [faded] my account O may god forgive me for my cruelty to an innocent family
