James M. Harris was born on November 1, 1819, in Georgia. He married Elizabeth B. Wiley on February 4, 1845, and they apparently had no children. He worked as a farmer in Hancock County, Georgia, and by 1850, he owned $8,000 of real estate. A decade later, he owned $11,000 of real estate and $80,000 of personal property. His wife died on November 4, 1898, and he passed away on November 24, 1904.
