New Haven Oct. 19th 1859—
Dear Father
I received your letter with Frank's note enclosed, yesterday morn. A letter from home does much to dispel homesick feelings; and this fact shows that I am in a little better spirits than when I last wrote—for I have had two letters from home. Still I often think of my pleasant visit at your house (ahem!), and wish it could be repeated. I looked in the Bulletin and saw reason to be glad no fire department was formed uptown, that is if the members thereof must have a general "sow-jam" once a year. Mr C. G. Child called on us yesterday, which was a pleasant surprise. I am going to a regatta this afternoon (it is Wednesday, and there are no lessons this P.M.) down at the harbor. /
The Misses Norton are in town, and sent me their cards. I called and left mine as they were out. Do you hear from George whether he is coming north this fall? Of course he will come and see me if he does. I should like to know where Kate and Bro. F are, and when they are coming through Elm City.
I don't feel very talkative this afternoon and will close. Your letters are not too long by any means, nor do they come too often. It seems very strange that Sallie can't write. Although I answered Toad's letter by word of mouth, yet I will write a response soon. I give him this warning to "stand from under"—with much love to all hands I remain your affectionate son Charley—
Please remember me to the Mackie friends—I have made up two of my four lessons—I think on the whole I like college life—
Please give this note to Frank
