Charles J. Arms to Hiram P. Arms, 22 October 1859
Yale Sat. Afternoon Oct. 22nd 1859

Dear Father
Your's and Frank's is received—thank you for writing so promptly. All goes smoothly here, and nothing startling has occurred. The Insurrection at Harper's Ferry is the general topic of remark & conversation just now. Poor, unfortunate, noble patriotic (Frank please take notice) but deluded men. I had noticed that Capt. Aaron Stevens was among the wounded, and thought it might be meant for Dwight. Your explanation in regard to his name makes it clear. I have just been reading in to day's Tribune, a little account / of Brown's & Stevens' condition. I suppose you saw it. How horrid the sentence "Both seemed prepared for death"! Of course I can't tell, but I don't view it in that light exactly. I wish you would tell me how his Father & Mother feel & act. It must be hard to read such articles as that, in the Tribune—It is very cold here, and it is reported that eight several distinct snow-flakes fell last Thursday night at twelve o'clock. I am glad it is so cold & snappish, for it renders the fire which dampness might require, quite endurable and comfortable. I am going to write Mr. Stedman to send me my money. I called on him when I was home, but did not see him. I have already had some, what was paid in advance for / the books, about seven dollars I think, out of which came six dollars for photographs. I need a pair of stout shoes. I wish to send Miss Watkinson some little present, and with out being extravagant at all, I think I could find a good and lawful use for ten dollars the coming winter term.

I suppose Miss W. is to be married on Sat. If that Mr. Bacon is not a good husband, I trust—but I forbear. Perhaps I am interested. "The New Haven News" understands that the Great Eastern will not visit Norwich, unless that iron watering trough is enlarged. Look out for a reply in the Bulletin. Shall be happy to hear from home early in the week. You will get this "after beans" monday—

With much love to all—your aff. son Chas
Enclosed is a note for Theodore— /
