Charles J. Arms to Hiram P. Arms, 17 January 1860
N. Haven Jan 17th 1860

Dear Father—
I must write a sleepy letter before I go to bed, for I must study in the morning. I don't know that anything of interest has occurred since I wrote last. I have paid all my bills, and have some money left in the treasury. If I get short I have some old coats I shall sell. Uncle Wm doesn't seem disposed to send me any of the indispensable & perhaps I had better send him another letter—showing him the boyishness / of venting his wrath on me—and that the question is not between his money & yours but his money or none. I think I shall get something before I get through college. I have sent Kate's letter to Lucy. I send you mine which please send to Lucy. She seems very happy and I am sure I am glad. Where is Wm now that he has taken a wife? When does he sail? I was very glad to see Mary Arms before she sailed for heathendom. The past week was, by a suggestion from Prof. Goodrich, set apart for special & daily prayer for the conversion of the world. I don't know whether you observed it or not. Some of the churches in N. York city & state did. There is no visible increase of religious / interest, except that our class prayer meetings are more interesting than usual. This is the time, you know, for the revival. The Sophs have just had their stands. given out for the first time—Coit & Ripley both have a dissertation stand—that is in the second division—there being four divisions, viz oration, dissertation, dispute & nothing. I think I am doing pretty well this term, but you mustn't think that I shall be among the first. Morally, I mean to be among the first. I hope you & Mother will feel safe on this point, particularly as regards spreeing & being dissipated, and I will not disappoint you. I wish you would ask Mr. Tufts if the [?] arrived safely. Greely himself did / them up for me, and he said at the time that it was his opinion that there would be a speaker chosen very soon. I have not heard of it as yet. Must go to bed now—Love to all from
Your aff Son Charles J. Arms
