Charles J. Arms to Hiram P. Arms, 31 March 1860
Yale College
New Haven Mar 31st 60
Dear Father—
Your note came duly to hand yesterday. Since then your humble serv't has joined Yale College. You know we have a probation of six months before we are matriculated. The faculty think my moral character & intellectual advancement will admit of my joining this venerable institution: so last night I took the oath & "signed the constitution" Quite a number were not this highly favored & some declined to sign from conscientious scruples—but as Mr. Paine explained that it only signified an intention to obey the laws of college / and as that is my intention I most willingly signed. My respected chum is on his way to Norwich to vote. He will return in the 10½ o'clock train Monday morn. As to my expenses I owe Ware $25.33 and my board bill will be about 22.00. I have money enough to pay for my boots & my washing bill & my fare home. This will make me all square for the term, except my term bill $6.00. The board bill may not be quite $3.00. I do not know yet. Mothers request about my photograph was rather late I sent the letter the day before. I recite my last lesson / before examination in 10 minutes. I shall be home probably Tuesday afternoon—possibly not until Wednesday. I am aching to get home though the term has seemed very short. Hyde called on us yesterday. He is on his way to Norwich to vote, as you probably know. I shall be lonely tomorrow without my chum. The Shams had a smashing torchlight procession last night composed mostly of Irish & Dutch patriots. The struggle is at hand now. Don't forget to vote & "God speed the right". No time for more. I shall expect to hear from you early in the week. With a great deal of love to the folks I am
Your Aff son Chas
