Charles J. Arms to Hiram P. Arms, 4 April 1860
Yale College
Apr. 4th 1860

Dear Father:
Your letter came this morning. The fifty dollars didn't slip out as you seem to suppose Kate's letter did. The truth is, I forgot to enclose the letter in my hurry to close up mine to you. I intend to enclose it in this so that you may know that I can do such things. I am in the midst of examination and cannot afford to write much. The Junior Exhibition came off yesterday. Nevins Hyde spoke very well—subject "Westminster Abbey". Horner also spoke well, "Old Connecticut has said it—Connecticut has done it". "It is not the amount of the / meat, but the congeniality of the guests which makes a pleasant feast". Buckingham has but about 307 majority, but the Republicans are honest & know that they have triumphed over the most shameful frauds & corruption. In one ward in N. however Rymore had more votes than there are loyal voters in the ward—Republicans & all. Wood did a great deal—but not quite enough—say by 400 Irishmen. I hope little Rhody will do as well. There must have been great fraud in Norwich to gain 116 votes for Leymann. It is thought here that / Wood will need the Irish in New York in the Presidential election, and that Conn. will roll out a great Republican majority. It seems none of you saw my chum. Well he looks as usual—except quite a respectable growth of whiskers on his chin. The Treasurer has deducted from the rent of Fuller's room, so as to make it about the same as this (mine). Every thing is all hurry & bustle now & I shall be glad when I find myself homeward bound. Love to all the folks. You will hear from me again next Tuesday or Wednesday.
Your aff son            Chas
