Charles J. Arms to Hiram P. Arms, 7 May 1860
Yale May 7th 1860.
Dear Father—
I have a moment just before retiring to let you know that I arrived home safely Tuesday evening. Nevins Hyde went down with me & was very agreeable. The Election Parade was a very fine sight. The dust was perfectly unendurable & took very much from the pleasantness of the affair. Our Governor look finely on his graceful stallion. The Norwich Wide Awakes & Hose Company attracted universal attention. In the evening the Wide Awakes from all parts of the state joined in, / & in fact joined in composed a tremendous Torch Light Procession. I found a good letter from Kate in the office & will enclose it if I don't forget it. Please keep me posted about Sallie and Theo. Haven't heard from my country sisters yet. Can't see why Frank don't write. This term promises to be a very pleasant one. The trees are leaving out & the grass is very green & all we need is a good drenching rain. The city is full of the Shad-eaters just now. I see Mr. Pratt & Adams quite often. Paid all my bills. /
Our room is getting very damp. I feel a little rheumatic at times, and if I am convinced that it is caused by the dampness of the room, I must look for other quarters—for it wont pay in the long run to live in a tomb. A fire nowadays is a nuisance yet it is necessary to health. Mr E. Fitch spoke to me Sat. asked me if I was lonesome but didn't ask me to call. I must call more this term. Must go to bed now. I hope you & Mother will take good care of yourselves & may God grant you "a happy issue out of all your troubles". Give my love to the girls (I suppose Ellen is back) & Hyde—also Puf & our mutual aunt Miss B.
Affectionately
Son C.

Please return Kate's letter and don't neglect the first chance to send my bible & thin brown slazy coat with large sleeves.
Chas
