Charles J. Arms to Hiram P. Arms, 13 June 1860
New Haven June 13th

My Dear Father:
Your letter came to night & brought most sad news—Not most sad news, for while there is life, there is hope. I fear Lucy will not recover. Let me remind you most earnestly that it takes four hours to reach W— from N. H. If she seems near her end, I hope you will not hesitate to telegraph for me. This if you remember, is Presentation day. The Seniors have bidden each other Good Bye, in the peculiarly affecting manner of Yale. This evening, the class of '63 have a Pow Wow to celebrate their nearness to Sophomore year, and the taking of Sophomore seats in chapel. While I am writing the Germania band is playing sweetly on the State House steps. Of course I have no taste for Pow Wows. Besides I have a terribly / swelled face, resulting from an ulcerated tooth. I am going to bed, although there is but little hopes of sleep in such a noise as the incipient Freshmen are making. I suppose you received my letter with the photograph, although you say nothing about in yours of this morn. I shall expect a letter every day now—I hope Mother will not work herself sick. With much love to her, Lucy—I am
Your aff son Chas
