Charles J. Arms to Hiram P. Arms, 13 September 1860
New Haven Sept. 13th '60

Dear Father:
Monday night saw me safely home. I passed the day very pleasantly in Hartford and Tuesday morning went to work moving and settling. I like my new room very much. About the only thing new about College is the Freshman Class—numbering 150. So you see '63 is the largest class yet. We have enough additions to bring our number up to 160. Judge Jessup, who has a missionary son, has one in '64. It is quite a respectable looking class. We begin Euripides—Demosthenes, Stanley's tables & go on with Horace. I called on Mrs. Oaks—all / well. My club is about to expire—Several fellows who promised to board with me have gone elsewhere and I cannot get enough to make it an object for Mrs. Bishop to go on. there are about as many clubs as there are students. I shall board in some cheap club. It would be quite an object to save my board—but I trust it will be for the best, as I shall have more time & less care. I mean to do a great deal more study than I did last year. I shall take daily exercise and try to follow your advice to conquer indolence. I tremble to think that my college course is so fast drawing to a close. I pray that I may not neglect my duties at this most important time. Ware rooms opposite me, and has a comfortable room. Miss Huntington's brother rooms under / Ware's room. When I was in Hartford I went over to the Retreat but as I had no ticket, and did not see Dr. Butler to tell him I was your son, I only saw a little of the to-be-seen. It is getting late and I must not prolong. I had not much to say, but thought you would like to know that I had arrived and was well. Give a great deal of love to Mother, the girls & Theodore—Whortle, I trust is well, dear little fellow. There's just room for him between Chum & myself in bed. Don't he want to come on? Please write soon telling all the news and I am your aff son
Charles J.Arms.

P.S. My club still lives & may survive the shock. I will inform you from time to time of its health. I trade with Mr. Oaks—
