Charles J. Arms to Hiram P. Arms, 21 September 1860
New Haven Sept. 21st '60

Dear Father:
I wrote Mother the other day, and as I suppose you will not think that sufficient cause for you to write me, I address you this time, particularly as I am after money. My board-bill was $39.48!! Wright didn't succeed very well. I paid $1.00 for board at the hotel when I first arrived, $5.00 for bed & bedding chairs &c, a dollar & a little more for moving, cleaning stove &c. Then I have had to get books and have a number of expenses—washing--$3.04 term bill 6.28—So you see my $60.25 is about gone. My expenses / for the rest of the term need not be great—only being incidentals, term & washing bills. We got a more expensive carpet than we expected, getting a good one that will last three years. I wish to pay $5.00 on it—then I have a few more books to get. So, if you will send me $10.00 I will try and not trouble you again soon. I got your check changed at the Treas's office—I carried it to Mr. Charnley, & the teller carried it into the back-room, and came back saying—"He doesn't know about it". I thanked him and left. My room looks quite cheerful and I shall be glad to see you in it soon. We start a fire quite soon, perhaps to-morrow. J.B. Gough lectures here / tomorrow night. I shall be there. Four students have been suspended, today. Three for engaging in a Rush at the "Statement of Facts", one of whom was stabbed, and the other two were stabbed—the fourth for a super abundance of marks and general inattendance on College duties. the time is three months. I have got along nicely this term and have enjoyed it exceedingly—It seems dry enough, when I think of plodding along regularly every day, but it is the best and pleasantest way to do. I suppose Winnie will be coming back about these days. Walker, it seems is a "man of destiny" yet. Please write all the news. Give my love to all & believe me y'r aff Son Chas.
