Charles J. Arms to Hiram P. Arms, 17 January 1861
New Haven Jan 17th '61

Dear Father:
Your last, dated Jan. 11th came duly to hand. Sallie's had arrived the day or two before. Please thank her for the much desired information, and assure her that I will answer her soon. There is little stirring here nowadays, except sleighs. It has been pretty good sleighing, but we have had drizzling rains, which have made it wretched walking. The lessons this term are very hard, especially Mathematics. Mr. Hutchinson makes us give original demonstrations of points, which, with the long lessons given out, it is hardly possible to study out as they are in the book. I shall try to do well in it. I have not found out my stand yet. When they are given out, I will inform you. The faculty will not give a man his stand in numbers. /

Speaking of the Faculty they have just suspended my friend Appleton for the term. He broke in a Freshman's door, and the Landlady caught him in the act. The Debate in Limonia came off last night—I send you a programme. If I dont take a high stand, I will try for the prizes. This time I got the second. I need not tell you that this covers me all over with glory here. Yesterday, I also went in to declaim for the prize. The mark we got there is kept over till next term, when we speak an original piece. The boys think I shall get a prize then—the amount of the 2nd Prize (Debate) is $10.00 I found after I got back here, that the question included Mr. Parker's Influence—all that I had to add, and it was the best part. My piece was pretty long, but I will make no apology for it. Chamberlain took the first, and Blatchley the third prize. I am glad the excitement is over for it / takes up a good deal of time to attend to writing & learning a Prize Debate beside keeping along the regular studies of the week. I must now buckle down. Love to all the folks—Shall be happy to hear from any of them—& with love to your self, I remain
Your aff Son
Charles J. Arms—
