Dear Father:
It is more than a week since I came back, but I trust you, knowing what I have had on my hands, have made all allowances for my neglect in writing. I arrived safely Tuesday night and settled the next day. I have changed my room, so that I can room alone. A fellow offered to pay the rent of my room for a term provided it was not over $10.00 by the middle of this term, if I would take the room he chose, and give him mine. I did it, and am now very pleasantly situated in South Middle, north entry, third story, front middle room—No 58—It is very much pleasanter & every way better, me judice, to room alone. I am not bothered with my chums company, can be alone when I like & live at peace with all men. Beside [?] my old chum, I don't know of a man with whom I would jibe exactly.Yesterday afternoon the celebrated Statement of Facts was held in Alumni Hall—I will send you a poster, that you may see y'r son's name in good sized print. The best judge of such things in college; & who has no extensive personal acquaintance with me, told a friend of mine that "Arms' was the ablest effort of the six". I rather wanted to read my piece to you, both for your correction, and that you might judge whether I had improved any in writing, but as you said nothing whatever of the affair, I thought I wouldn't intrude it.

We have a new tutor in Greek Mr Wheeler, who lived with Mr. Gulliver & taught the Falls School. We have but three divisions this term and three studies. Philosophy, Cicero's "Pro A. Cluentio", and Plato. Our instructors are Prof. Thatcher, Tutors Chapin & Wheeler—I enclose my bills. I have been sleeping on the floor thus far & need a bedstead very much. Books & coal must also be bought. I should like the money as soon as convenient, and will / use it economically. I heard via N. York that Sallie went home to the wedding. I suppose she has returned by this time. I shall hope to hear of Frank's appointment somewhere soon. It seems Ned appointed Chas Coit Adjutant—That's strange. Please let me hear from you soon. Hoping you are all as well as myself I remain

Your aff son
