Charles J. Arms to Hiram P. Arms, 5 April 1862
New Haven Apr. 5th '62
Dear Father—
Your last was duly received, and on this rainy Saturday afternoon I propose to answer it—
It has been very pleasant here until to day, for nearly a week, and the matter is looked upon as marvellous by all who are posted in New Haven climate. The Junior Exhibition passed off pleasantly and quite creditably on Wed. last. There were a few first class pieces, but the bulk were rather prosy and try-to-be philosophical. We are now in the midst of our examination. I do not get through / till Tuesday, and will be home Wednesday afternoon. I should like my money Tuesday morning, but Wed. will do. I have some writing to do which will keep me till Wed. I got a letter from Frank by the same mail as you, which, together with those you sent me, I will bring when I come home. I had a talk with Prof. Thacher the other day, in which he said I had gratified him by my improvement this term, and as I had over sixteen marks, he should have an opportunity of reporting progress to my Father. I have been out a good deal this term from sickness. But for this, I should have done a good deal better. On the whole I am pretty well satisfied. I will tell you more of Prof T's conversation when I get home. It is always pleasant to go home, and also to go back to college. At both ends / of the route are pleasant and kind friends glad to see us, and a reunion with friends from whom we have been separated is among our pleasantest sources of enjoyment. Therefore, I am glad I'm going home, and after a vacation of four weeks, I shall be ready to return to the pleasant duties and associations of College. You do not say whether William has come or not—from which I infer that he has not. Hoping to see you all soon, with much love I am
Your aff. son
C. J. Arms
