Charles J. Arms to Hiram P. Arms, 12 May 1862

Dear Father:
It is about time to inform you that I arrived here Tuesday night. I have only time for a few lines this morning. Saunders is here, and has passed his examination with the exception of Philos. into which he goes to-day. He is with me, and will remain during the term. Guess he will be pleasant. Has Frank come? I have watched for the arrival of the Cahamba, but have not seen it. Please ask him to write to me right / away. Glorious news yesterday. Norfolk & the Merimack are gone in—Richmond will be the next. The grass is green, the trees leaving out, and the weather deliciously warm. I spoke to Mr. Case about bringing my coat, which he will do any Monday. Election Day passed off pleasantly. Gov. looked finely. Shook him by the hand, also Sen. Smith of Norwich. Paid my bills as far as able. Will write more fully & carefully soon. With much love to all & hoping to hear soon.
Your aff. son
Charles—
