Charles J. Arms to Hiram P. Arms, 1 September 1862
New Haven
Sept. 1st 1862

Dear Father—
I have just time before going over to Camp, to say, in reply to y'rs of Sat. that Dr. Gulliver said I could have Dolly, and pay when I conveniently could—I hold him to it & do not wish you to pay for it. If he chooses to jockey his horse away to another man, I can buy one here in five minutes. I prefer Dolly, and would like to have you close the bargain, and send her down at once—not paying cash. I wish you to see Mr. Wait and send me $200. at once. There are a thousand little / things which I must get & I cant go off with an empty pocket. I will certainly send home whatever of my pay I do not use. The sword, sash & belt were received. I have sent a note of acknowledgement to the Bulletin. The shirt is just the thing. I want two more, three pairs of drawers, three pr's stockings & three undershirts. It is impossible to tell you when we shall go, probably the last of this week. I think I will take the ½ past 3 train from here, some day, and come back the next morning. That will be better than for you & Mother to come down. I could come now & stay till we go to war if I pleased, but my Rolls are not made out and I must do it. Sergeant Major is a brilliant failure. / I will write or telegraph if I cannot go. By the way, Col. Ross says I had better take no trunk, unless I can get a leather one. Please think that matter over. I got the letter from Sogg which you forwarded—

Till you hear again, believe me
Y'r aff son
Charlie
