Charles J. Arms to Hiram P. Arms, 5 September 1862
New Haven Sept. 5th 1862.

Dear Father—
I recd the check in due season. Thank you very much for y'r promptness. I telegraphed you yesterday that I should be home Sat. I was afraid you & Mother would think we were going this week, and would come on—I see nothing, now, to prevent my coming. I must come back Monday in the ½ past one train at the farthest. I propose to bring home my saddle & bridle & have Theo. ride him (Dolly) over Monday. I will give him a pass back on the R.R. I can get just the trunk I want here for $19.00 and / think I shall do so. If I do, I will bring it home and get it filled. Everything goes on smoothly here, and I appear to be making friends. Nothing whatever has occurred to mar the even tenor of my way. And, on the whole, could you wish a son to go to the war under more favorable circumstances? We shall probably see fighting soon, but I shall take special care of the Adjutant and I guess he will get along. I shall stop & see Frank as I come home, and will probably stop at the Landing in the ½ past three train to get a pair of Light blue Regulation pants I have ordered. I think my photographs will be done. The first attempt lacked eyes to give vivacity to the picture—

In haste & love—Charlie
