Charles J. Arms to Hiram P. Arms, 7 October 1862
Camp near Sandy Hook Maryland
Oct. 7th 1862—

Dear Father:
Your short note and a half a newspaper was received yesterday, having been forwarded from Washington. I do not intend to write home much more unless I can hear a little oftener in return. It is a good deal for me to write private letters, when I have so many public ones, and so much else to do. Besides all this it is so terribly cold here nights, and hot day times, that it takes the nerve all out of a man. A good many things are happening from day to day of interest, but I do not feel in the spirit of writing. If I hear from home I will write soon at length. This letter is to inform you that I am in tolerably good health. Dolly came by turnpike & stood the journey well, but is no better—Probably never will be—Letters should be addressed 20th C.V. 12 Army Corps. near Sandy Hook Md. With love to all,
                                                Charlie—
