Charles J. Arms to Hiram P. Arms, 25 October 1862
Head Quarters 20th Reg Conn. Vols
Near Sandy Hook. Sat. morn. Oct 25 '62

Dear Father—
We are in the midst of preparations to move at 9 o'clock A.M. Know nothing of our destination. Are to carry two days cooked rations. This may all be a false alarm to us—to see how quickly we can get ready. I will write again and let you know. War is very uncertain. If we move, it will probably be across the mountain into Virginia.

Had a good letter from Lucy last night.

There has been no news showing why we should move—Possibly it is only a freak somebody has taken. The consequence is, we leave comfortable quarters, and will lie in the dirt and mud for a few days. I never expect to live as comfortably again, till I arrive in Norwich, "after the victory". If we fight you shall hear a good account of

Your aff son
Charlie—

Of course you wont send the box till you hear from me
                                                                                                C.

A good deal of cavalry is passing our Camp—I guess we shall go—Goodbye to all

[overleaf]
