Jonathan T. Clarke to Hiram P. Arms, 1 December 1862
Head Quarters 20th Conn. Vols.
Loudon Valley Va Mond. Dec 1st 1862.
Rev. H. P. Arms
Sir
Your son, Capt Arms, desires me to write the following at his dictation—
"I wrote you the other day that I was going to have the jaundice, have changed my mind and concluded to have the Typho Malarial fever, have been sick a week, but am now doing pretty well—have every cure and attention and altho' there is nothing dangerous about my symptoms it will be sometime before I am strong enough to walk about and "rough it" much. I consider my disease a species of "the dry rot" of which I wrote. I might prefix Hypo to the name of my disease as I have had it constantly—have suffered considerable pain from sore joints and weak back, and also a great deal of head ache. I find it very tiresome to lie on my back so constantly—am trying to keep up good courage and have no fear for the result. Dont worry about me, but believe me—
Your affectionate son,
Charlie."
I am, sir, very respectfully,
Your obedient servant
J. Tillotson Clarke
