Charles J. Arms to Hiram P. Arms, 28 February 1863
Stafford C.H. Feb 28th 63.

Dear Father,
As it is some time since you have heard from me, except through the newspapers, I will write a line to let you know that I am well and still in Uncle Sam's service. The order for my dismissal has not reached me yet, and very likely it never may, as the A.G. told Col. Ross when he was in Washington, that it was intended more especially for loafers around the city. If it does come, Col. R. says he can settle it by a letter to the A.G. and that I need not go to Washington. If I am dismissed, and I suppose I am, it is only temporarily. The worst feature / of the case is, that some of my friends will see the first order and not the correction, though counter order ought to be made as public as the original one. We have had Inspection and Muster to-day. Co H. did and looked finely, and I was able to do what the Col admires above all other things, vis. account promptly for every man present and absent. I have been under the weather for a few days past with a severe cold, but am much better now. My box has not arrived yet. All the express for the corps is coming down tomorrow, and it will not be many days before I shall be regaling myself on your bounty. I hope there is nothing in the box that will spoil by two weeks' / keeping. There are about to be several changes and transfers in the Reg. and I am to have two new Lieutenants. They are very nice fellows, and we shall get along nicely.

Please say to my Norwich acquaintances that I am still in the service, and shall be till death, discharge (honorable), or the end of the war, compels me to leave. Give much love to the family, and believe me

Your aff son
Charlie—

I sent a letter for Frank to Norwich. If he is not there please forward to his address—
                                                                                                                                    C.
