Charles J. Arms to Hiram P. Arms, 5 October 1864
Head-Quarters, District of North Carolina,
New Berne, N.C.,
Oct 5th, 1864.
Dear Father,
Being about the only staff officer who hasn't either died or run away, I am very busy, and have only time for a line. I am Act'g Asst Adj't Genl at these hd Qrs (as above), the Capt Judson having got frightened and run away to Hatteras. We are all well at our house and in good spirits considering the frightful Pestilence which has befallen us. The fever still rages with unabated fury. We pray for cold weather. I will let you know immediately if any thing occurs of interest to you. I have been paid & mustered out as Capt Co H 20th C.V. Hence the Official Doc. you forwarded bears no special importance with it. I have no doubt you will receive one periodically for some time. Love to all at home from
Your aff son
Charlie.
