Dear Father:
I have just heard that a Coal Schooner is going to New York in a day or two, and as I haven't had a chance to send you a letter for several, I must take advantage of this one. We are still at it. One frost has visited us (night before last) but it don't seem to have done much good. The weather is quite warm yet. The General and I have managed to get along without sickness. I cannot say that I feel perfectly well—nobody does now, but I am / perhaps as well as anybody. I have no doubt the fever will abate in a few days. No boats come to New Berne and none go from us. It is a queer way the Q.M. at Fort Monroe has of punish us for having the yellow fever. The War Dept has issued an order stopping communication with this Post. The Adjt Genl of the Dist has returned and I am now running Sub-Dist Hd. Qrs. I've been so busy that the thought of being sick has found no room in my mind. I hope you are all well at home. Love to all from

Your aff son
Charlie
