Dear Father,
Yours of the 27th inst was received to-day. Glad to know that my letter allayed the anxiety of the General's friends. We have seen the rumor you speak of in a good many papers. Several officers have read their obituaries in the northern papers—which is not peculiarly pleasant. We continue well. A few new cases every day—but the fever has decidedly abated. The Ram at Plymouth has been / blown up and sunk. That is good news, certainly. The deed was accomplished by Lieut Cushing of the Navy, who has figured considerably in Cape Fear River. He improvised a torpedo boat from a ship's launch, put a small engine in her, and sailed right under the Ram's nose. When he got near enough, he pulled the lock-string and jumped overboard. Lieut C. was wounded by the blowing up of his own boat, and he and one of his crew were the only ones saved—the rest having been drowned, killed or captured. We occupy Plymouth, but do not mean / to hold it. Genl. Palmer has returned. He is going up to Plymouth this P.M. and has invited me to go. If Genl Harland can spare me from the office I shall go. I shall draw a little pay in a day or two, and will send you some money. I got a letter from Sallie to-day, and will answer it next time Very glad to hear that Mother is well again. I will try and keep you posted as to news here.
Very truly
Y'r aff son
Charlie.
