Dear Father,
So far all is well, and orders just received seem to indicate that it is to be so far and no farther. Genl Harland's Brigade is to be left here to garrison and fortify this place while the rest of the command moves on to join Sherman at Goldsboro.

I told you in my last that we expected to hold our own at the creek and drive the enemy back next day. We did it. After a very sharp little fight we got / the Rebels started on the run and they didn't stop till they had got beyond Kinston, of which place we took quiet possession day before yesterday. It is a quiet little village of no pretensions, and will make a very quiet home for a few months. I am well satisfied with the orders, as I have done about all the marching I care to. Tomorrow we move into a house and begin to live again.

Sherman is very near Goldsboro, which place is evacuated, the Rebels "pulling back" to Raleigh. Railroad communication will be open to G. from New Berne, and everything made ready for the great, and perhaps last / fight at Raleigh.

It certainly looks as though the jig were most up. I haven't heard from home in a long time. Will you not write and let me know that you are all well and have not forgotten

Your aff son
Charlie
