Dear Father,
I thought surely this mail would bring me news from home, but it didn't. You don't realize that I am very anxious to know what is going on just now. I had a letter from Sallie two weeks ago informing me of her desire that I should attend her wedding—and intimating that her movements would in a measure be governed by mine. I have been waiting to find out whether there was any prospect of my Regt leaving the service before Sept 1st I / am now led to believe that it will not, and have forwarded an application for a leave. If nothing new transpires before it comes back, I shall probably spend ten or fifteen days with you the first part of June.

I don't know whether Sallie is home yet or not, but I wish to have her know that if she is married sometime between the fifth and twentieth of June either I shall be there. or Otherwise she will have to wait till Sept. to avail herself of my participation in the festivities.

I am very anxious to see you all. Kate must be home now with all the dignity of the Western Matron. I will bring Grace up from N. London (of course you / all love her) and we can have a very nice Thanksgiving. What are you going to do with me when the war is over? Will you board me while I am reading law, and take your pay in wood-chopping and cow-milking? I am in a hurry to get at my studies. My three years army experience will prove of advantage to me, I think. I look back upon it now with a good deal of satisfaction.

You will hear from me again before I start

My best love to Mother and "the children" from

Your affectionate son
Charlie—
