Charles J. Arms to Hiram P. Arms, 13 December 1865
New York Dec 13, 1865

Dear Father—
I will report progress—Mr Oakley is very sorry that he cannot offer me anything worthy of my acceptance, but don't really see how he can. Says I can have a Negro School out at Flatbush for four months at $50 per month. I could study nights.

The compensation would be gratefully received, but I don't think it would pay to bury myself out there. I want to be where some business is going on. / I have therefore refused that. He says if I will get along till early spring, he can get me a good position in his new firm. Meanwhile I have three or four good offers to go into a law office as student. The best one is from Fullerton, Knox & Rudd, the latter gentleman being a nephew of Mr. Wait. I get in for nothing. In addition to this I shall try to get something to do—enough to pay my board. Tingley, 41 West 17th St. has offered me half of his elegant room and I am at present domiciled with him.  It is very pleasant. I eat at Mrs Mackie's.

Sarah is here. I am to / wait on her to some place of amusement to-night. Mr Clarke starts for Charleston this P.M. at 3 o'clock—

All well at the Cousins'. I will write again when I am definitely settled.

            With much love to all,
I am cheerfully
            Your aff son
                        Charlie.
