William H. Bone to Adrian Bone et al., 5 April 1863
Tuesday April 5th 1863.
Beloved Mother and Brother and sister.
I have not much to write to you but to tell you that i am well and hope that when these few lines reach you that they may find you [paper hole] yourselves good health. We have nice weather here it rained almost all afternoon yesterday and looks much like rain today. I am on Regimental guard today. That box that you sent got here yesterday everything kept nice in it as it was the day it was put up except them two loves of bread they moulded some I fryed mess of tomatoes this morning they ate first rate. Ben Sam and I go in togather each one eats as if all of the things belonged to him. I had a mess of greens yesterday To Murray and i went out and gathered up a lot of [?] and cooked it with a peace of meat i thought / that they were the first greens that i ever ate. We had another little tramp after the rebels satureday night and sunday. satureday evening as we were eating our suppers we were ordered to get two days rations in our haversacks and be ready to start at any moment and about dark we started [paper hole] and went about six miles towards Hartsville and camped about half past one untill morning when we went on a foot and left our wagons we went about two or three miles farther and got on a large hill where we could have full command of the country around us and planted two cannon. then our cavelry started out to hunt them up and coax or drive them to us but they could not find them so sunday night we came back to camp without seeing any enemy
