Atlanta Ga Oct 15th 1864
 
Mrs. Stevenson
I have just received your letter of Sept 25th and it gave me most plesure to hear from you for I did not know as the letter that Mr. Corwin wrote you had ever reached you and as I have had no chance to find out til this morning your letter came to hand.
 
                        the Accident happened on 30th of August about twelve oclock near Turners Ferry, Ga the Dr. was got ther as sone as possible and his wonds was dreas taken car of as well as could be at that time he remaned in the camp on abead for about two hours and then / he was taken on A Stretchar and carred six milds to the Division Hospittal wher his wunds was taken car of agane and he ask the Dr ther if he thought he could get well and the Dr told him he could not. woll he sed he was not afraid to die I think he was prepared to die for he has often sed he ment to be at enny time while he was in the Armey for he did not know what time he might be taken away. he had his right mind til afew moments befoer he expired whitch was about ten Oclock that eavening he bid all his friends good by and told me to tel you and his Mother not to worry for he had gon to A better home. it was his wish to be sent home and if I lived to ever get home to come and sea / you and his Mother and I shal do so if I live and I prey that my life may be spared til this cruil war is over you ask what they gave him Either for when the accident first happened he was in so much pain that they had to give it to him. you ask ho he was helping at the time he was shot he was helping Scott Baker a man from Birmingham Purhaps you might know him you ask if hea dide easy he Dide as easy as if asleep He was rather poor but his health was good I dont think you could sea him if he was to be sent home but I think the Boys would send him home if they ever get paid off at least I will do my part. it would be most impossible to / send him on unless some of his friends came on after him wee ar some distance from where he was burried buried but I think that I could get a pass to goe back at enny time if not I could tel enny boddy so they could not mis it for I had a large head boar put up with his name cut on it so ther would be no mistake You spoke of Walter Lindsley he did not have enny box made for him but I and John North made one for Evely so he could be taken up without enny trouble At the time Walter was killed Evely and Twane Marsella was on the same post and Evely was the only one of the three that was not hurt Twane was wonded and Walter was killed Evely has escaped agreat meny narrow chances on this Campaign / But it seamed as if he was not to be killed by the Rebs He was thought very mutch of in the Company and they all feal his los verry mutch and to me he was like a brother I could not have felt wors to have lost a brother than I did to part with him for he had ben a tent mate of mine evry since I came to the companey but he is gon and I cant wish him back as I have not got enny more time to wright this time as I have got to get reddy to goe on Picket so I shal hafto bring my letter to aclose I shal be verry happy to corespond with you. you may think that this letter has ben along / time on the road but the track has ben torn up for the past too weaks so that yestady was the first mail wee have had in that length of time
 
Pleas write to me as often as conveanant and I shal be happy answer enny question that you may wish to ask about Evely and believe me to be your true friend
