Virginia L. M. Ewing (maiden name: Miller) was born on June 27, 1848, in Mount Vernon, Ohio, to John H. and Elisabeth Miller. She married Charles Ewing on December 20, 1870, in Cincinnati, Ohio. Together they had seven children: Charles, born on December 22, 1872; Virginia, born on June 22, 1874; Eleanor, born on December 15, 1875; Mary, born on February 1, 1877; John K. Miller Gillespie, born on October 25, 1878; James Gillespie Blaine, born on September 26, 1880; and Kathleen, born on January 6, 1882. The family lived in Washington, D.C. After her husband died on June 20, 1883, she began receiving a pension of $30 a month, which was eventually increased to $50 a month by an act of Congress. By 1900, the family had moved to Westchester County, New York, yet they had returned south to Washington by 1920. Ewing died there on October 21, 1937, and is buried alongside her husband in Arlington National Cemetery.
