Mary Jane Goss

Mary Jane Goss (maiden name: Mater) was born around the year 1855 to Daniel and Margaret E. Mater. She married Marion Goss as his first wife on November 17, 1872, in Parke County, Indiana. Marion was a veteran of the 149th Indiana Infantry Regiment and served alongside her cousin, Jacob D. Mater, during the war, which was likely how the two first became acquainted. Jacob’s father, Ira Mater, performed the marriage. On March 4, 1875, they had a daughter, Ida Belle. Not long after their daughter’s birth, the marriage began to fracture. By 1880, she had moved into her parents’ home in Kansas, taking her daughter with her. On February 17, 1886, the state of Indiana granted Marion Goss a divorce and the sole custody of their daughter Ida. Mater allegedly died somewhere in the western United States in the early twentieth century.
