Caroline Elizabeth Hammond

Caroline Elizabeth Hammond (maiden name: Lawrence) was born on June 1, 1842, in New York City. She married John Fox Hammond as his second wife on April 15, 1863, at the Church of the Incarnation in New York City. Together they had two daughters: Katherine Betts, born in April 24, 1864, and Elizabeth Percy, born March 17, 1865.

Her husband died of tuberculosis shortly after the war on September 29, 1866, in Poughkeepsie, New York. Following his death, she began receiving a pension of $30 a month beginning the next day. Hammond moved to Germany in 1886, collecting her pension checks in Munich. She did not receive payments for her pension between December 1916, and September 1918 due to the effects of World War I on mail routes. She died of old age when she was 86 years old on March 31, 1928, in Ruhpolding, Germany, where she is buried.
