Myrtle Allen Hancock (maiden name: Allen) was born in Texas on January 15, 1857. She married James W. Hancock as his second wife on November 4, 1875, in Texas, where they had at least five children: Sue, born April 14, 1877; Lucy, born December 1, 1879; Allen E., born October 4, 1881; Ruth, born April 25, 1893; and Edwin M., born March 18, 1896. Following her husband’s death on December 26, 1905, in Austin, she began receiving a pension of $8 per month beginning on January 25, 1906, which later increased to $12 per month. Hancock died of a tumor in her head caused by sarcoma on December 1, 1912. She is buried at the Oakwood Cemetery in Austin.
