Emilie "Mimie" A. Tice (maiden name: Genestelle) was born on February 14, 1845 in Missouri. She married Douglas Wyatt Tice in St. Louis, Missouri, on October 11, 1864. The couple had eight children: Vilrey Chauvin, born on October 3, 1865; Louis Douglas, born on November 8, 1867, yet later died on February 26, 1871; John Hoppe, born on January 13, 1870; Louise, born on February 11, 1872; Edward De Vence, born on December 15, 1875; Francis "Frank" Hirschberg, born on July 20, 1878; Lucille Marmaduke, born on June 3, 1881; and Douglas Lillburn, born on June 21, 1883.
Following the death of her husband on November 12, 1903, in St. Louis, she began receiving a pension of $8 per month. When the pension department denied her initial request for an increase, she wrote to them, exclaiming, “I am nearly 82 years old and need the money and I will not be much longer taking money from ‘Uncle Sam.’” Her pension later increased several times until she was receiving $40 per month by June 4, 1928. She died on July 2, 1934, and is buried in Troy, Missouri.
