Nancy Davis (maiden name: Nancy Hollingsworth Morris) was born on March 9, 1825, in Maryland to Ann Hollingsworth Morris and John B. Morris, a prominent banker, railroad man, and Whig politician. She married Henry Winter Davis in Baltimore on January 26, 1857. They had two daughters: Anna Hollingsworth, born about 1857, and Mary Winter, born on May 28, 1863. Nancy and her daughters continued living in Baltimore following Davis's death in 1865 and remained well-to-do, with multiple servants, several items of valuable property, and many trips abroad. She was also an advocate for women's education, serving as president for the Baltimore committee to admit women into the Johns Hopkins Medical School. The committee, which, through its various branches in cities across the nation, raised $100,000 in 1890 to be put toward the new medical school provided women "shall be admitted to [the] school upon the same terms as may be prescribed for men." Nancy died on December 4, 1902 at her home in Baltimore.
