Charlotte Calvert

Charlotte Calvert (maiden name: Charlotte Augusta Norris) was born March 11, 1816, in Maryland, to William Norris and Sarah Hough Martin. She was christened on November 3, 1820, in Baltimore’s Associate Reformed Church, on the same day as five of her siblings. She married Charles B. Calvert on June 6, 1839, in Baltimore. They had at least six children: Ella Spence, born in 1840; George Henry, born in 1841; Charles Baltimore, born in 1843; William Norris, born in 1845; Eugene Stier, born in 1846; and Jules Van Havre, born in 1848, who died in infancy. In 1851, while her husband served as president of the Maryland Agricultural Society, Charlotte crafted a quilt to display at the state’s annual agricultural exhibition. Charles died on May 12, 1864, and Charlotte remained at their Riversdale estate for the rest of her life. In 1870, the estate was worth more than $100,000, and Charlotte employed a cook, carriage driver, and at least one African-American servant. Charlotte died on December 7, 1876, and was buried in the family’s private cemetery at Riversdale.
