Samuella Menzies (maiden name: Samuella Lewis Peniston) was born around 1832 in Kentucky to Richard M. Peniston and Ann Lewis. Her father was a clerk in Trimble, Kentucky, who owned at least three slaves. She married lawyer John W. Menzies on December 29, 1853, in Carroll County, Kentucky. They had at least eight children: Sally, born on November 2, 1856; Lillian, born in 1857; Fennell, born on October 27, 1858; Anne, born in 1861; Katharine, born on May 23, 1864; Elizabeth, born on July 29, 1867; Nelly, born on October 30, 1869; and John William, born on November 27, 1874. The family lived in Covington, Kentucky, until the 1860s, when they settled in Falmouth. Her husband died on October 3, 1897, and Samuella spent the final years of her life in Covington. She died of a cerebral hemorrhage on December 8, 1907, at Fort Mitchell, Kentucky, and was buried in Linden Grove Cemetery.
