In the fall of 1861, Charles H. McElroy published this ad calling for volunteers to "sustain the Government, put down rebellion and rebuke sympathizers with treason."

VOLUNTEER!

Young men of Delaware, your Country needs you—must have you; if you won’t volunteer you must be drafted; will you wait for that? Come forward promptly to sustain the Government, put down rebellion and rebuke sympathizers with treason.

The undersigned has been authorized to raise a company of Infantry. Leave your names with General Chas Sherman, at the American, Lieut. C. H. McElroy, at his office at William’s Block; Henry Sherman, at Berkshire, or V. T. Hill, at the store of R. E. Hills & Son, No. 4 William’s Block.
