Virginia M. Bond

Virginia M. Bond (maiden name: Darden) was born in North Carolina on August 18, 1829, to Alfred Whitehead Darden and Sarah Matilda Moore. The family lived in Murfreesboro, North Carolina, where Darden owned $4,200 in real estate and at least 22 slaves. Darden operated an academy for “young ladies” on his plantation, and according to one account, it was a “flourishing and well patronized school.” Virginia married William E. Bond in the late 1840s, and they settled in Edenton, North Carolina. They had at least four children together: William Marion, born around 1858; Linwood Darden, born around 1861; Anna L., born around 1864; and Edward, born around 1867. Virginia died in Chowan County, North Carolina, on January 4, 1889, and was buried in the local Baptist Cemetery.
